Trail Closures Due to Muddy Conditions

Open Space and Mountain Parks to close numerous trails because of snowy and muddy conditions

The City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) Department will close multiple trailheads and trails across its system tomorrow, Tuesday, May 13, because recent rain and melting snow have caused area trails to become extremely muddy.

OSMP is taking this step to prevent long-term damage to trails and nearby plant life. Often when trails become muddy, visitors hike parallel to existing paths. That can cause widening and braiding of trails and future erosion problems.

The department will temporarily close Marshall Mesa, Greenbelt Plateau, Flatirons Vista and Doudy Draw trailheads Tuesday morning. This closure includes the following trails:
•    Community Ditch
•    Doudy Draw
•    Springbrook Loop North and South
•    Goshawk Ridge
•    Flatirons Vista North and South
•    Prairie Vista
•    High Plans
•    Greenbelt Plateau
•    Coalton (the portion maintained by the City of Boulder)
•    Coal Seam
•    Marshall Valley
•    Marshall Mesa
•    Cowdry Draw

OSMP will also close Lefthand Trail from Boulder Valley Ranch to Neva Road.
OSMP staff will assess closed trails and will open as them as conditions warrant. For more information on trail closures and openings, please visit
While many other OSMP trails are still open, they also may be muddy because of the recent weather. The department asks visitors to mitigate potential resource damage by remaining on trail.
